Girls Connection

The Girls Connection Program is for girls between the ages of six to twelve years who are experiencing behavioural problems at home, school, or in the community. Through both individual and group work, the girls learn and practice self-control and problem solving skills. The program also helps parents to effectively monitor and guide their child’s behaviour.

If you suspect a child under 12 is exhibiting difficulties in one or more following areas:

  • Bullying
  • Aggression
  • Non-Compliance
  • Lack of Self-Control and Problem Solving Skills
  • Trouble Keeping Friends
  • Police Contact

The following services are available for families:

Parent Training Groups run concurrently with the Transformer Club. Groups meet once a week for 12 consecutive weeks for parents to learn effective child management techniques and share their concerns with other parents.

Girls Connection Groups meet once a week for 12 consecutive weeks where girls participate in a club whereby they learn to SNAP™ (Stop Now And Plan) in difficult situations. They participate in discussions and role-play.

Girls Growing Up Healthy provides an avenue for parents and their daughters to learn about girls’ physical and sexual health together, using that process to build relationships as well as healthy body image and self-esteem.

Individual Befriending is individual contact with a supportive, caring adult mentor to stimulate recreational or community interests while reinforcing SNAP™.

Academic Tutors are available for children functioning well below grade level. Volunteers work with the children on a one on-one basis to complete homework assignments with the focus of improving overall literacy skills.

School Advocacy helps parents ensure that their children receive the best possible education. Family workers work with the parents that are experiencing difficulties with their relationship with the schools to develop plans to improve the relationship. Each teacher is contacted and informed of the program, and offered behavioural management support.

Hamilton Arson Prevention Program for Children (HAPP-C) This program is provided by Hamilton Emergency Services - Fire, forchildren with fire involvement/ interest.

Victim Restitution encourages children to apologize to their victim and redress their mischief. An apology letter or some form of community service are typical ways we promote pro-social behaviour.

Volunteers help children learn new hobbies and interests and participate in local recreation centers.

Long Term Connections include parent alumni groups, family support nights, parents as volunteers, and continuing support to children and their families up to the child’s 18th birthday.

All contact with the Program staff is confidential and parents have access to all records compiled by the Program.

    Costs

These services are offered free of charge by Banyan Community Services. This project is partially funded through the Governmentof Canada’s National Crime Prevention Strategy. Other funders include: Hamilton Community Foundation.
